After 20 years ESPEN returns to the Netherlands, this time to The Hague

The Hague has been announced as the upcoming host city for the 39th ESPEN Congress, due to take place in 2017, between the 9th and the 12th of September. The ESPEN Congress is not new to the Netherlands, as congresses were held here in Maastricht in 1981 and in Amsterdam in 1997.

Every year, the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) attracts participants from a diverse array of specializations, including doctors, nutrition nurses, pharmacists and dieticians. More than 3,500 participants from 100 different countries are expected to attend.

“We are very excited that The Hague was chosen to host the ESPEN Congress – we appreciate its focus on innovation, and the outstanding talent it will attract. We are convinced that the event will have a positive impact on our city,” said Deputy Mayor Karsten Klein, The Hague's alderman for Economic Affairs, Harbours, Welfare and Health.

“The Hague is set up to provide an excellent event infrastructure through the city partnership network,” said Nienke van der Malen, director of The Hague Convention Bureau. “The city has everything in it to ensure that the participants have a memorable and enjoyable experience during their stay here”.

The main theme of ESPEN 2017 will be innovation in nutrition. For the first time in its near four decade history, the event will feature five parallel sessions organized along four main trajectories, namely topics in the acute, chronic, paediatrics and geriatrics settings. Another highlight is the one-day ‘Healthy Food Congress’, which will be held shortly before the main programme of the 39th ESPEN Congress

Next to the regular programme, the organizers of this congress will work in close cooperation with the local food industry in order to provide a meaningful context and engaging material for the participants. The Hague and its surroundings are a base for many companies and institutions, including the world’s largest greenhouse horticulture.
